LAGOS, NIGERIA — Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has declared that having a male heir is not his priority, insisting that his three daughters are fully capable of leading his business empire and continuing his legacy.
Dangote made the disclosure on Monday during an interactive session with journalists and business leaders in Lagos, where he spoke about succession planning, family, and the future of his conglomerate. He said he had never placed any premium on having a son, contrary to the expectations often associated with African patriarchs, and that he was proud of the women his daughters had become.
“I have never been under any pressure to have a male heir. My daughters are my heirs, and they are more than capable of running the business. In fact, I have always told them that the sky is their limit,” Dangote stated. “The idea that only a male child can carry on a family legacy is outdated. What matters is competence, character, and the ability to lead.”
The billionaire businessman, who has an estimated net worth of over $20 billion, has three daughters from his marriage to Zainab Dangote: Mariya, Halima, and Fatima. He disclosed that his daughters are already actively involved in the management of various aspects of the Dangote Group, gaining experience and demonstrating the leadership qualities required to steer the conglomerate into the future.
“My daughters are intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated. They have been part of the business for years, and they understand what it takes to run a successful enterprise. I have no doubt that they will do a fantastic job when the time comes,” Dangote said.
The businessman also reflected on his own journey, noting that he started his business career as a young man with a small loan from his uncle and grew it into one of Africa’s largest industrial conglomerates. He said the lessons he learned along the way had shaped his philosophy on leadership and succession.
“Success is not about gender; it is about vision, discipline, and the willingness to work hard. I have seen women lead successful businesses and build empires. My daughters are proof that women can excel in any field,” he added.
Dangote’s comments have been welcomed by women’s rights advocates and business leaders, who described them as a significant endorsement of gender equality and female leadership in a region where inheritance and succession are often biased toward male children. The President of the Nigerian Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Mrs. Ngozi Ekeoma, praised Dangote for his progressive stance, noting that it would inspire other business leaders to reconsider their attitudes toward women in leadership.
“Aliko Dangote is a role model for many Africans. His statement sends a powerful message that women are just as capable as men when it comes to running businesses and leading families,” Ekeoma said.
The Dangote Group, which has interests in cement, sugar, salt, fertiliser, petroleum refining, and petrochemicals, is one of the largest conglomerates in Africa, employing tens of thousands of people across multiple countries. Dangote’s eldest daughter, Mariya, is a director in the Dangote Group, while Halima and Fatima are also involved in various capacities.
Dangote, who turned 69 in April 2026, said he had no immediate plans to step down but was already preparing his daughters for leadership roles. He urged African families to abandon the practice of discriminating against female children in inheritance and succession matters, arguing that such practices robbed the continent of talent and potential.
“Let us stop limiting our daughters. They have as much right to aspire and to lead as our sons. If we want to build a great continent, we must tap into the potential of all our people, regardless of gender,” he said.
