The Federal Government has renewed its commitment to strengthening the National Youth Service Corps as the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, inaugurated the NYSC Staff E-Training Portal in Abuja.

The new digital platform was launched during the 2026 Batch C Pre-Orientation Workshop, where stakeholders examined ways to modernise the NYSC Orientation Course and better prepare young Nigerian graduates for the realities of a rapidly changing society.

Olawande said the Ministry of Youth Development would continue to support the NYSC and work with its leadership to improve the Scheme’s effectiveness.

The minister commended the NYSC management for introducing innovations aimed at improving staff performance and strengthening access to knowledge through technology.

According to him, the increasing use of digital tools within the Scheme is an important step towards building a more efficient and responsive workforce capable of meeting the demands of modern public service.

He described the E-Training Portal as an avenue for NYSC personnel to continuously improve their professional knowledge and skills, while encouraging staff and stakeholders to embrace technology as an important part of institutional development.

Olawande stressed that Nigeria’s youth development strategy must go beyond academic qualifications, particularly as the country continues to grapple with the challenge of unemployment among graduates.

He said young Nigerians need practical competencies that can help them navigate the employment market and create opportunities for themselves and others.

The minister identified leadership, entrepreneurship, critical thinking and problem-solving as some of the areas Corps Members should develop during their service year.

He also emphasised the importance of discipline, integrity and personal responsibility, noting that the NYSC experience should encourage young Nigerians to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the country.

Olawande described the service year as more than a compulsory national assignment, saying it should provide Corps Members with opportunities to serve, lead, acquire useful skills and participate actively in national development.

He further identified the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, popularly known as SAED, as one of the most important components of the NYSC at present.

The programme is designed to expose Corps Members to practical skills and entrepreneurship opportunities that can improve their chances of becoming economically productive during and after the service year.

Speaking at the event, the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, explained that changing social conditions have made it necessary for the Scheme to regularly review its Orientation Course content.

Nafiu said the theme of the workshop, “Reimagining the NYSC Orientation Course: Building Resilient, Responsible and Service-Oriented Corps Members for a Changing World,” reflects the need to prepare Corps Members for challenges that extend beyond the traditional expectations of national service.

He said the objective was to strengthen the character, mindset, skills and civic awareness of young Nigerians passing through the Scheme.

The NYSC boss also stressed that the success of the Orientation Course cannot be achieved by the Scheme alone, noting that effective cooperation among government institutions, security agencies, camp officials and other stakeholders remains essential.

He called for stronger partnerships to protect the welfare and safety of Corps Members throughout their service year.

Nafiu assured that NYSC management would continue to work closely with security agencies to assess potential risks, take preventive measures and ensure safer environments for Corps Members wherever they are deployed.

The Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at NYSC, Mr Nura Umar, also highlighted the importance of the Orientation Camp as the first major point of contact between Corps Members and the Scheme.

Umar said the period provides an important opportunity to shape the values, character and understanding of national responsibility among young graduates before they proceed to their places of primary assignment.

He called for the Orientation Course to be continuously modernised in terms of content, teaching methods and delivery to ensure that it remains relevant to contemporary realities.

Umar urged workshop participants to develop practical strategies for strengthening relationships among stakeholders while improving camp administration, discipline, leadership development, Corps Members’ welfare and security.

He also called for greater attention to SAED and other programmes capable of equipping Corps Members with practical skills that can support their transition into the labour market after national service.

The launch of the E-Training Portal comes as the NYSC prepares for another cycle of Corps Members, with the 2026 Batch C programme expected to bring thousands of Nigerian graduates into the national service system.

For the Scheme, the challenge now is to ensure that the new technology translates into measurable improvements in staff capacity, Orientation Course delivery and the overall experience of Corps Members.

With increasing demands on young Nigerians to acquire practical skills alongside formal education, stakeholders at the workshop believe that a more modern NYSC can play an important role in preparing graduates to become responsible citizens, skilled professionals and contributors to national development.
