England U-20 women’s head coach Lydia Bedford has admitted that her side struggled to cope with the directness and physical strength of Nigeria’s Falconets during their 3-0 defeat in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
The Young Lionesses were eliminated from the tournament after Nigeria produced a commanding performance at the Bielsko-Biała Stadium on Thursday, with Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu finding the net for the two-time World Cup runners-up.
Nigeria made a fast start and took the lead in the eighth minute through Rafiu, who produced an impressive individual effort to beat the England defence before firing past goalkeeper Katie Cox. The forward’s movement and composure immediately put England under pressure and gave the Falconets the platform to control the contest.
England attempted to respond and created opportunities through Princess Ademiluyi and Rachel Maltby, but Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma proved difficult to beat. She made a crucial save to deny Ademiluyi before producing the defining moment of the first half when she stopped Maltby from the penalty spot.
The penalty was awarded after a VAR review, giving England an opportunity to level the contest. However, Uzoma read the situation brilliantly, pushing Maltby’s effort onto the crossbar and away from danger to preserve Nigeria’s advantage going into the break.
The Falconets returned from the interval with the same intensity and doubled their lead only two minutes into the second half. Akekoromowei found the net with a well-taken left-footed volley in the 47th minute, putting England in an increasingly difficult position.
The goal was also a reflection of Nigeria’s ability to make their pressure count at key moments, with England struggling to deal with the speed and strength of the Falconets in attacking areas.
Nigeria then completed the victory in the 73rd minute when substitute Mary Mamudu made an immediate impact after coming on. Mamudu received an assist from Precious Oscar before calmly finishing to make it 3-0 and effectively end England’s hopes of mounting a comeback.
For Bedford, the defeat was disappointing, particularly because it brought England’s World Cup campaign to an earlier conclusion than they had hoped. However, the England coach acknowledged that Nigeria’s approach presented problems her players were unable to solve consistently.
Bedford explained that Nigeria’s forwards were particularly effective because of their direct style and physical presence, qualities that England struggled to match throughout the encounter.
The England coach also described the tournament experience as valuable for her players despite the disappointing exit. She said the lessons gained in Poland could become important as the players progress towards senior international football.
Bedford pointed to the possibility of some of the players eventually pushing for England’s senior team under Sarina Wiegman, while others could continue developing through the England U-23 setup.
Nigeria’s victory has taken the Falconets into the quarter-finals, continuing their strong campaign after they advanced from Group F. Their group-stage journey included a heavy 10-1 victory over New Caledonia after an opening defeat to Spain and a goalless draw against China.
Falconets head coach Moses Aduku, meanwhile, has urged his players not to become carried away by the impressive victory. After the match, he told the players to celebrate briefly before immediately turning their attention to the next challenge.
Nigeria will face Colombia in the quarter-finals on Sunday after Colombia defeated hosts Poland 1-0 in their Round of 16 encounter. The quarter-final is scheduled to take place at the Władysław Król Municipal Stadium in Łódź, with kick-off set for 2pm Nigerian time.
The Falconets will now look to build on their impressive victory over England as they continue their pursuit of a first FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title. Their latest performance has also strengthened the belief within the squad that they can compete with some of the strongest teams remaining in the tournament.
