Terim Makes Bold Claim on Osimhen: “He Can Be First”

ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Former Galatasaray head coach Fatih Terim has made a bold claim about Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, describing the Nigerian as one of the best centre-forwards in world football and insisting that he can be the best if he maintains his focus and composure.

Terim, one of the most decorated coaches in Galatasaray history, was discussing the club’s squad ahead of their upcoming Süper Lig clash with Trabzonspor when he gave his assessment of Osimhen. The 73-year-old was full of praise for the Nigerian striker, highlighting his physical qualities, determination, and ability to punish defenders.

“Osimhen is an extraordinary centre-forward, one of the very best in the world,” Terim said. “As long as he stays focused on the game, competing against him one-on-one is really very difficult.”

Terim also believes Osimhen must maintain his composure if he is to continue performing at the highest level. “As long as he doesn’t get unnecessarily angry and doesn’t put unnecessary stress on himself,” the former Galatasaray boss added, suggesting that the striker’s temperament is the only thing standing between him and true greatness.

Osimhen has established himself as one of the most dangerous strikers in European football since joining Galatasaray, following his successful spell with Napoli. The Nigerian is currently recovering from a groin injury suffered during Galatasaray’s 3-2 Süper Lig victory over Basaksehir. His injury means he will miss Galatasaray’s meeting with Trabzonspor, although he remains part of Nigeria’s plans for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle included Osimhen in his squad for the matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month, underlining the striker’s importance to the national team. Nigeria will be hoping that Osimhen recovers in time to lead the attack as the Super Eagles seek to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON.

Terim also discussed Galatasaray’s summer signing Rafael Leão, praising the Portuguese winger’s ability to beat opponents and his physical strength. “If I were the head coach, whether his performance is good or bad, he would be among the first players I would always put on the pitch,” Terim said.

However, it was his assessment of Osimhen that stood out, with the former Galatasaray coach making it clear that he considers the Super Eagles star to be among the elite forwards in world football. Terim’s comments add to the growing chorus of praise for Osimhen, who has consistently delivered goals at every club he has played for.

The Nigerian’s form in Turkey has been exceptional, with 65 goals in 78 appearances for Galatasaray, and his performances have attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. However, Osimhen remains committed to Galatasaray for now, and his focus is on helping the club win trophies and on leading Nigeria to success in international competitions.

As Osimhen continues his recovery from injury, Nigerian fans will be hoping that he returns to full fitness in time for the AFCON qualifiers. If Terim’s assessment is anything to go by, the Super Eagles have one of the best strikers in the world leading their line, and his presence could be the difference between success and failure in the upcoming matches. For now, Osimhen’s focus is on rehabilitation and returning to the pitch, where he will aim to prove once again why he is considered one of the most lethal forwards in world football.
