Nollywood actor Wole Ojo has urged Nigerian filmmakers and producers to allow the team behind Black Market to enjoy their newly achieved Guinness World Record without immediately attempting to break it.
Reacting to the record-breaking movie screening in Lagos, Ojo appealed to his colleagues to “calm down” and give the achievement time to stand on its own.
“My Nigerian producers, let ‘Black Market’ team enjoy their GWRecord, let this record last; don’t let it be like the last record that involved cooking,” he said.
Ojo’s comment comes after the Black Market team made history with a massive screening at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, where Guinness World Records recognised 51,000 qualifying viewers who watched the film from beginning to end.
The figure surpassed the previous record of 43,624 viewers set in the Philippines in 2015 during a screening of Felix Manalo.
The Lagos event attracted an even larger crowd, with total attendance reportedly estimated at about 64,000, although Guinness World Records counted 51,000 people who met the requirements for the record.
The record has generated excitement across the Nigerian film industry, with the achievement highlighting the ability of Nollywood productions to mobilise audiences on a massive scale.
Ojo’s remark appears to reference the growing trend of Nigerians attempting to break Guinness World Records through various unusual feats, including cooking marathons and other endurance challenges.
The actor’s appeal has since sparked reactions among Nigerians online, as the entertainment industry celebrates the latest addition to Nigeria’s growing list of Guinness World Records.
