Actor Alan Ritchson has spoken publicly about a deeply painful period in his life, revealing that he once attempted to take his own life and believed at the time that his family and community would be better off without him.
Ritchson, known for his role as Jack Reacher in the Reacher series, reflected on the experience while discussing the way suicidal thoughts can distort a person’s perception of their own worth and impact on others.
The actor said it remains difficult for him to understand how he could have reached a point where he was prepared to harm himself, particularly because he was a father.
“And it’s still hard to think about the fact that like I would do something to myself, especially with kids. But I now understand what it’s like when people are like, ‘I don’t understand why they would kill themselves.’ And I’m like, ‘I can tell you from experience, they thought they were giving the world a gift,’” he said.
Ritchson described that belief as one of the most painful misconceptions a person experiencing suicidal thoughts can have.
“That is the saddest lie that we could tell ourselves,” he said.
The actor also recalled how he viewed himself at the time, saying he had convinced himself that removing himself from the lives of those around him would somehow help them.
“Jesus, I thought that I was doing my family and my community a favor because I was such a mess,” Ritchson said.
His comments offer a personal perspective on the distorted thinking that can accompany suicidal crises, particularly the false belief that loved ones would be better off without the person struggling.
Ritchson’s decision to speak openly about his experience has also highlighted the importance of recognising suicidal thoughts as a crisis rather than accepting the hopeless conclusions they can produce.
