US Sends 9,000 Troops, Third Carrier

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States is deploying roughly 9,000 additional sailors and Marines to the Middle East, alongside a third aircraft carrier, as President Donald Trump considers the possibility of renewed military action against Iran.

The deployment includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. Together, the ships are carrying more than 7,000 sailors and about 2,000 Marines, according to U.S. officials cited by the Associated Press.

The move could result in three U.S. aircraft carriers operating in the region by late October or November, significantly increasing Washington’s military presence around Iran.

Third Carrier Heads To Region

The USS Theodore Roosevelt and accompanying vessels are heading towards the Middle East, where the carrier could join the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington.

The deployment would mark an unusually large concentration of U.S. naval forces in the region. U.S. officials said the overall naval presence could exceed 20,000 sailors and Marines, supported by hundreds of aircraft.

The United States previously had three carrier strike groups operating in the Middle East in April, marking the first such deployment since 2003.

The Roosevelt deployment is expected to provide Washington with additional military options amid the continuing conflict with Iran.

Trump Raises Prospect Of New Strikes

The military buildup comes as Trump has publicly discussed the possibility of resuming or intensifying strikes against Iran.

In an interview with Time magazine, Trump said further bombing of Iran after the November 3 U.S. midterm elections was possible.

He also rejected a recent Iranian ceasefire proposal, saying the offer did not meet his expectations.

The latest deployment therefore comes against a backdrop of both military preparations and ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict.

US Strengthens Regional Defences

Washington is also reinforcing the defensive capabilities of its regional partners.

According to Axios, the United States has recently deployed two additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

One battery was sent to protect an oil facility in Saudi Arabia, while another was deployed to defend a gas installation in Qatar, according to U.S. officials and a regional source cited by the publication.

The move is intended to strengthen protection for critical energy infrastructure amid concerns about possible Iranian retaliation if U.S. military operations expand.

Growing Military Presence

The additional forces will increase the number of U.S. warships, aircraft and personnel operating around the Middle East.

The USS Makin Island group is also carrying Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, adding amphibious capabilities to the deployment.

The buildup does not by itself confirm that new U.S. strikes against Iran have been ordered. Rather, officials and reporting indicate that Washington is positioning additional forces while the Trump administration considers its military and diplomatic options.

The deployment comes as the conflict enters another period of heightened tension, with Washington maintaining pressure on Tehran while military forces move into position across the region.
