The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has extended its N66 per litre petrol discount across its retail outlets nationwide until October 31, 2026, while insisting that the initiative does not amount to a return to fuel subsidy.
The company introduced the discount on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
It said the initiative aims to ease the financial pressure on motorists amid rising global crude oil prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 9, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, said the company remained committed to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to reduce the impact of rising fuel prices on households and businesses.
The statement followed remarks by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8.
NNPC said the promotion was designed to provide some relief to Nigerians, particularly by reducing the pressure of fuel costs on transportation and business operations.
The company acknowledged that higher petrol prices affect daily commuting expenses and the cost of running businesses, adding that the discount was intended to offer direct support to customers during the current economic strain.
However, NNPC clarified that the price reduction applies only to its retail outlets. It said the initiative does not establish a uniform pump price nationwide or alter the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.
“This discount is a customer relief initiative and does not represent the reintroduction of petroleum subsidy,” the company said.
NNPC also urged Nigerians to disregard claims suggesting that the discount signals a return to the former petrol subsidy regime.
The company added that it would continue working with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to maintain reliable fuel supply while exploring practical ways to ease the burden on consumers.
It further promised to communicate the scope and duration of its customer relief programmes clearly so Nigerians could make informed purchasing decisions.
The statement, dated October 9, 2026, was shared on X by President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The extension means customers buying petrol at participating NNPC Retail outlets can benefit from the N66-per-litre reduction until the end of October.
However, motorists buying from other filling stations should not assume the same discount applies, as NNPC has stressed that the promotion is limited to its own outlets.
