LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Lagos State Government has warned that it will stop construction sites and penalise developers. The warning is against dumping building materials on roads and drainage channels.

The government issued the warning on Sunday through the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.

The Warning

Wahab said the government has observed that some developers are using public roads and drainage channels as storage spaces. He said this is illegal and unacceptable.

“The government will not tolerate this anymore. Any developer found dumping materials on roads or blocking drainage channels will face the full weight of the law,” Wahab stated.

Enforcement Measures

The commissioner said the government has deployed enforcement teams across the state. He said the teams will monitor construction sites and public spaces.

He said developers found violating the law will have their sites sealed. They will also be fined.

“We have given enough warnings. Now, we will enforce the law. We will seal their sites and make them pay fines,” he said.

Impact on Drainage

Wahab noted that dumping materials on drainage channels causes flooding. He said it blocks the free flow of water.

He urged developers to use designated storage spaces. He also urged them to clear their sites after construction.

What This Means

The government’s action is aimed at preventing flooding. It is also aimed at maintaining order in the state.

Unregulated construction sites often lead to environmental degradation. They also cause traffic congestion and pose safety risks.
