OWERRI, NIGERIA — Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to local government autonomy. He said the President is also committed to institutional strengthening and financial viability.
Uzodimma made the statement on Sunday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Owerri. The meeting brought together local government chairmen and party leaders.
The Commitment
Uzodimma said the President has demonstrated his commitment to LG autonomy through his actions. He cited the Supreme Court judgment that granted financial autonomy to local governments.
He said the President has also ensured that funds are directly disbursed to local governments. This, he said, has empowered councils to deliver development at the grassroots.
“President Tinubu believes in local government autonomy. He has shown it through his policies. He wants local governments to function effectively,” Uzodimma stated.
Call for Accountability
The governor urged local government chairmen to be accountable. He said they must use the funds for the benefit of their communities.
He said the President has provided the enabling environment. But he said chairmen must deliver results.
“The funds are now available. But you must use them wisely. You must deliver projects that will improve the lives of your people,” he said.
What This Means
The statement highlights the President’s commitment to devolving power. It also underscores the importance of local government autonomy.
Many states have resisted LG autonomy in the past. But the Supreme Court judgment has changed the landscape.
What Happens Next
Local governments will continue to receive direct allocations. Chairmen will be expected to deliver on their mandates.
For now, the focus is on ensuring that funds are used transparently. The government has promised to monitor the process.
