El Clásico: Mourinho Says Real Madrid Have No Special Plan to Stop Lamine Yamal

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has insisted that his team will not adopt a special tactical plan to stop Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal ahead of Sunday’s El Clásico, declaring that respecting an exceptional player does not mean abandoning their footballing identity.

With the two Spanish giants preparing for another chapter in one of football’s fiercest rivalries, Mourinho has made it clear that Real Madrid will approach the contest with confidence rather than reorganise their entire system around the threat posed by the teenage winger.

Yamal has established himself as one of Barcelona’s most dangerous attacking weapons, using his dribbling ability, close control, creativity and eye for goal to trouble opposition defences. His performances have made him a major talking point ahead of the encounter, with questions surrounding how Madrid intend to contain him.

However, Mourinho has dismissed the idea of building a defensive strategy specifically around the Spain international.

“There’s no specific plan anti-Lamine,” Mourinho said during his pre-match press conference, according to comments reported by football journalist Fabrizio Romano.

“He’s a great player, great players deserve respect, but changing your plans, your structures is another. The players are all good, same as ours.”

The Portuguese tactician’s comments underline his determination to maintain Real Madrid’s tactical principles against their bitter rivals. Rather than allow one individual to dictate the team’s entire approach, Mourinho believes his players must concentrate on executing their collective responsibilities.

His position also sends a message to the Madrid dressing room: Barcelona may possess players capable of deciding a match through individual brilliance, but Real Madrid must trust their own quality and organisation.

Nevertheless, refusing to introduce a special plan for Yamal does not necessarily mean Madrid will ignore his threat. The challenge for Mourinho will be ensuring that his defensive structure can contain the winger without leaving dangerous spaces elsewhere on the pitch.

Yamal’s ability to isolate defenders, cut inside and create opportunities for teammates makes him particularly difficult to defend against. Allowing him too much time on the ball could give Barcelona the opportunity to exploit gaps in Madrid’s defensive shape.

The tactical battle could therefore depend on how effectively Madrid’s defenders and midfielders work together to limit his influence while preserving their ability to attack.

The stakes are significant for both clubs. According to the pre-match standings reported ahead of the fixture, Real Madrid trail Barcelona by six points, making Sunday’s encounter an important opportunity for Mourinho’s side to reduce the gap in the La Liga title race.

Madrid will also be without Vinícius Júnior, who is suspended for the match. His absence removes one of the team’s most dangerous attacking outlets and places additional responsibility on the remaining forwards to deliver in a contest where scoring opportunities could prove decisive.

Barcelona, meanwhile, enter the derby following a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. The result ended their positive run in the competition and raised questions about their defensive performance, although Mourinho does not believe one defeat will significantly damage their confidence.

Asked whether Barcelona’s European setback could influence their mentality, the Madrid manager played down its significance.

He argued that losing a single match would not necessarily change a team’s psychological state or confidence, drawing a comparison with how a hypothetical heavy defeat for his own side would affect his position.

His response suggests that Madrid must prepare for Barcelona at their strongest rather than expect their rivals to struggle because of their midweek disappointment.

The encounter also brings renewed attention to Mourinho’s return to the El Clásico spotlight. His previous spell at Real Madrid, between 2010 and 2013, was defined by intense battles against Barcelona under Pep Guardiola, with tactical adjustments often playing a central role in the rivalry.

During that period, Mourinho frequently sought ways to disrupt Barcelona’s possession-based football and limit the influence of Lionel Messi, whose creativity and goalscoring threatened opposition defences.

His current position on Yamal presents an interesting contrast with the tactical debates of that era. Rather than publicly committing to an individualised strategy against Barcelona’s teenage star, Mourinho is emphasising collective strength and loyalty to his team’s established structure.

However, the difference between respecting a player’s quality and successfully containing him will become clear only when the teams meet on the pitch.

Yamal will be eager to influence the game, while Madrid must find a balance between restricting his opportunities and creating enough attacking pressure to challenge Barcelona at the other end.

For Mourinho, the objective is straightforward: compete against Barcelona as a team rather than allow the presence of one outstanding player to dictate Madrid’s identity.

Whether that approach delivers the desired result remains to be seen, but the Portuguese manager has already made his position clear ahead of a derby that could have significant implications for the La Liga title race.
