Real Madrid claimed a crucial 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday, October 25, as Kylian Mbappé scored twice to settle a fiercely contested El Clásico and end the hosts’ impressive winning run in La Liga.
Raphinha briefly brought Barcelona level in the second half, but Mbappé struck again late in the contest to secure all three points for José Mourinho’s side, delivering a significant statement in the Spanish title race.
The victory was built on Madrid’s clinical finishing and defensive resilience, while Barcelona were left to regret several missed opportunities, including a promising chance wasted by Lamine Yamal shortly before half-time.
Madrid began the encounter with greater attacking intent, with Arda Güler testing Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García early in the game. The Turkish midfielder first sent an effort narrowly wide before forcing another save as the visitors looked to exploit spaces in Barcelona’s defensive line.
Barcelona also threatened through Anthony Gordon and Raphinha, but Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin dealt with their attempts. The hosts suffered an early setback when Xavi Espart was forced off with an injury, prompting Alejandro Balde to enter the game in the 30th minute.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 41st minute when Mbappé put Real Madrid ahead. Yan Diomande delivered a dangerous cross into the Barcelona penalty area, but Gerard Martín’s attempted clearance struck Mbappé’s right thigh and deflected into the net.
Although the finish was fortunate, Madrid had created enough pressure to make their advantage count, leaving Barcelona with a difficult task before the interval.
The hosts almost responded immediately. Lamine Yamal found himself with a clear opportunity inside the penalty area but failed to direct his effort on target, allowing Madrid to escape without conceding.
At the other end, Diomande nearly doubled the visitors’ advantage just before half-time after racing through on goal. However, his attempt struck the side netting, ensuring Barcelona went into the break trailing by just one goal.
Madrid maintained their disciplined approach after the restart, while Barcelona increased the pressure in search of an equaliser.
The contest became increasingly physical, particularly in the 56th minute when João Cancelo appeared to stamp on the back of Diomande’s thigh. Madrid’s players appealed for a red card, but the incident did not result in a dismissal.
Barcelona eventually found their breakthrough in the 61st minute through Raphinha. Pedri supplied the assist with an intelligent pass, allowing the Brazilian to shoot left-footed from the right side of the penalty area. His effort travelled through Jude Bellingham’s legs and into the bottom-left corner, leaving Lunin unable to prevent the equaliser.
The goal brought Barcelona back into the contest and raised hopes of a comeback in front of their home supporters.
However, Madrid refused to surrender control. Two minutes after Raphinha’s goal, Güler forced García into another important save with an effort from a difficult angle.
Barcelona responded with further pressure, but Lunin produced an excellent stop in the 66th minute to deny Gerard Martín’s header from a corner. The save proved important as the hosts searched for a goal that could have turned the contest around.
Yamal continued attempting to influence proceedings, but Barcelona struggled to convert their attacking pressure into clear-cut opportunities. Madrid remained dangerous on the counterattack, with Güler and Mbappé continuing to test the home defence.
As the match entered its closing stages, Mourinho introduced Eduardo Camavinga in place of Bernardo Silva, adding fresh energy to Madrid’s midfield.
The substitution helped set the stage for the decisive moment.
In the 87th minute, Mbappé restored Madrid’s lead after a brilliant attacking move involving Bellingham, Güler and Camavinga.
Bellingham initiated the move with an impressive roulette to escape pressure before releasing the ball to Güler. The Turkish midfielder then linked up with Camavinga, who drove into the penalty area, evaded Pau Cubarsí and delivered a perfectly timed cutback.
Mbappé was waiting in the right position and finished into the unguarded net, sending the travelling Madrid supporters into celebration.
The goal was officially recorded in the 87th minute by match statistics, although Real Madrid’s own match report placed the decisive strike in the 88th minute. It also brought the French forward to 100 goals for the Spanish giants.
Barcelona attempted to find another equaliser, but Madrid defended their advantage through the closing minutes and stoppage time.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid, leaving Barcelona to reflect on Yamal’s missed opportunity, their defensive difficulties and their inability to capitalise on Raphinha’s equaliser.
For Madrid, Mbappé’s brace proved decisive, while Bellingham’s ingenuity and Camavinga’s contribution to the winning goal highlighted the visitors’ ability to produce quality under pressure.
The result handed Madrid a valuable three points at Camp Nou and ended Barcelona’s perfect start to the league campaign, giving the visitors renewed momentum in the race for the La Liga title.
