Fuel prices remain a major economic concern across Africa, putting pressure on households and businesses as transportation and operating costs continue to rise.

In October 2026, Malawi maintained its position as the continent’s most expensive petrol market, while Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone also recorded prices above $2 per litre.

Data from GlobalPetrolPrices shows significant differences in petrol prices across African countries, reflecting variations in import costs, taxes, exchange rates and government policies.

The October ranking includes Malawi, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Cape Verde, the Central African Republic, Seychelles, South Africa, Lesotho and Kenya.

Import Costs Drive Prices Higher

Several factors influence petrol prices across Africa, including international oil prices, currency movements, taxes, transportation expenses and government subsidies.

Countries that depend heavily on imported refined petroleum are particularly vulnerable to changes in global markets.

Landlocked nations may also face additional costs because fuel must be transported over long distances from ports in neighbouring countries.

Malawi’s position at the top of the ranking highlights the pressure that import costs and currency challenges can place on domestic fuel markets.

Businesses and Households Face Pressure

Expensive fuel affects more than motorists. Higher petrol prices can increase public transport fares, raise the cost of delivering goods and reduce the profit margins of businesses that depend on transportation.

Manufacturers and retailers may also face higher distribution expenses, some of which can eventually be passed on to consumers through increased prices for everyday goods.

For households, this can mean spending more on transportation while having less money available for other needs.

Outlook

Fuel affordability remains an important issue for African economies, particularly those exposed to international petroleum markets and foreign-exchange pressures.

Although some countries benefit from domestic production or government subsidies, others continue to face high pump prices.

Changes in global oil prices, exchange rates and national energy policies will remain important factors shaping fuel costs across the continent.
