Lagos State is set to expand its Blue Line rail network with three new stations expected to begin operations by the end of February 2027, bringing train services closer to more commuters along the Lagos–Badagry corridor.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announced that the new stations would be located in FESTAC, Alakija and Trade Fair.
Their opening will increase the number of operational stations on the Blue Line from five to eight.
The Managing Director of LAMATA, Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed the plan at the 2026 media parley organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.
The expansion is expected to provide residents in the affected areas with an alternative to road transportation, particularly along busy routes where traffic congestion frequently affects commuting times.
The Blue Line currently operates between Marina and Mile 2, with stations at Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba and Mile 2.
The additional stations will extend the service beyond Mile 2, improving access to rail transportation for residents, traders and workers in surrounding communities.
For businesses along the corridor, the expansion could also improve access for employees and customers while supporting commercial activities around the new stations.
The three stations form part of the second phase of the Blue Line project, which is designed to extend the railway towards Okokomaiko.
The wider expansion includes additional planned stations at Volkswagen, Lagos State University and Okokomaiko.
Beyond the rail project, LAMATA disclosed that four Quality Bus Corridors were nearing completion, while construction work on interchange hubs at Marina and Mile 2 had recorded considerable progress.
These developments form part of Lagos State’s broader efforts to improve public transportation and strengthen connections between rail and bus services.
Although the new stations are expected to improve connectivity, the impact on commuters will depend on the reliability of train services and how easily passengers can connect to their final destinations.
The planned opening in February 2027 will mark another step in Lagos State’s efforts to expand its mass transit network and reduce dependence on road transportation.
