Preparations for a town hall meeting featuring Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have been thrown into uncertainty following allegations that organisers are facing restrictions over their planned venue in Enugu State.

The controversy emerged on Wednesday after an account identified as Revolutionary Youth alleged on X that organisers had secured a venue but were being prevented from using it.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 2pm at Amadeo Event Centre in Enugu.

The account urged supporters in the state to spread the information and gather at the venue, claiming that Governor Peter Mbah did not want Obi to hold the town hall meeting in Enugu.

Another account, Obidient Movement Headquarters, also accused the state government of attempting to stop the gathering.

However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged restrictions remain unclear. It has not been independently established whether the organisers were formally denied access to the venue, whether the event centre withdrew an earlier agreement or whether any government agency issued a directive concerning the meeting.

The Enugu State Government’s response to the allegations was not available at the time of publication.

The claims against the government have not been independently verified.

Allegations Follow Earlier Tensions in Enugu

The controversy comes amid tensions between the NDC and the Enugu State Government following incidents involving party supporters earlier in October.

Violence was reported at Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat in Enugu on October 10, prompting conflicting accounts from the party and the state government.

The government denied involvement in the confrontation at the airport, saying the gathering had raised concerns about compliance with airport regulations.

The NDC disputed the government’s account.

The incidents also resulted in the death of NDC supporter Ifeanyi Nworie, who reportedly sustained a gunshot injury during the violence.

The latest dispute over the town hall venue has renewed questions about the circumstances under which political parties and their supporters can organise public gatherings in the state.

With the event scheduled for Thursday afternoon, attention is now focused on whether the organisers will be able to proceed with the meeting at the planned venue.
