Cristiano Ronaldo’s outstanding 2008 campaign with Manchester United has been voted the greatest Ballon d’Or-winning season in a fan poll organised by French football magazine France Football, placing the Portuguese superstar ahead of his longtime rival, Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo’s first Ballon d’Or-winning season emerged as the top choice in the Ballon d’Or of All Time (B.O.A.T.) initiative, which invited football supporters to select the most impressive individual campaign among multiple winners of the prestigious award.
Messi’s remarkable 2012 season finished second, while Ronaldo’s 2017 campaign secured third place, underlining the enduring influence of the two football icons in debates about the greatest individual performances in the sport’s history.
The result brings renewed attention to Ronaldo’s extraordinary achievements during the 2007–08 season, when he established himself as one of the most decisive players in European football.
Playing for Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, Ronaldo scored 42 goals across all competitions as the English club enjoyed a memorable campaign, winning both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
His contribution extended beyond the overall goal tally. Ronaldo scored 31 goals in the Premier League to finish as the division’s leading scorer and also claimed the European Golden Shoe, recognising him as one of the most prolific goalscorers in European domestic football that season.
Manchester United’s Champions League triumph further strengthened his case for individual recognition. Ronaldo scored in the final against Chelsea in Moscow, although United eventually secured the trophy through a penalty shootout after the match ended level following extra time.
Those performances helped Ronaldo win his first Ballon d’Or in 2008, marking the beginning of a collection that would eventually grow to five titles.
He subsequently won the award in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, building a legacy defined by sustained excellence, prolific goalscoring and success at the highest level of European club football.
However, Messi’s second-place finish demonstrates why the debate over the greatest individual season remains compelling.
The Argentine forward produced one of the most extraordinary goalscoring years in football history in 2012, scoring 91 goals for club and country across the calendar year.
That remarkable achievement remains a defining moment in Messi’s career and has continued to strengthen his standing in discussions about the sport’s greatest individual accomplishments.
Messi went on to win a record eight Ballon d’Or titles, while Ronaldo collected five, with their rivalry becoming one of the defining narratives of modern football.
The B.O.A.T. initiative shifted the focus from their overall careers to particular Ballon d’Or-winning seasons, asking supporters to judge individual campaigns rather than decide which player had enjoyed the better career.
The final top 10 was dominated entirely by Ronaldo and Messi, with each player occupying five positions.
Ronaldo’s 2008 campaign claimed first place, followed by Messi’s 2012 season in second and Ronaldo’s 2017 campaign in third. Messi’s 2023 season finished fourth, while Ronaldo’s 2016 campaign took fifth place.
Ronaldo’s 2014 season ranked sixth, followed by Messi’s 2015 campaign in seventh. Ronaldo’s 2013 season occupied eighth place, while Messi’s 2011 and 2009 campaigns completed the list in ninth and tenth positions respectively.
Other legendary footballers featured in the wider selection, including Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten, Franz Beckenbauer, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Kevin Keegan, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Brazilian Ronaldo.
Their inclusion brought different generations of football greatness into the same conversation, highlighting how difficult it can be to compare players whose achievements came in different eras and under different conditions.
Nevertheless, the final standings placed Ronaldo and Messi at the centre of the discussion, reflecting the extraordinary influence both players have maintained over the modern game.
France Football presented the B.O.A.T. initiative as a celebration of football supporters and their passion for the Ballon d’Or. The poll was not an official Ballon d’Or award, nor was it a replacement for the traditional voting process used to determine the annual winner.
Instead, it offered fans an opportunity to express their preferences among some of the most memorable individual seasons produced by previous winners.
Ronaldo’s victory in the poll adds another distinction to his remarkable career, particularly because it recognises the season in which he first reached the summit of individual football honours.
Nearly two decades after his breakthrough campaign at Manchester United, his performances in 2008 continue to command attention, demonstrating the lasting impact of a season in which individual brilliance and major team trophies came together.
While Messi’s 2012 campaign remains extraordinary for its record-breaking goalscoring achievements, the fan vote has placed Ronaldo’s 2008 season ahead of it.
The result is another chapter in the long-running debate between two players whose achievements have shaped an era of football and whose greatest seasons continue to inspire discussion among supporters around the world.
