APC insists Uzodimma remains candidate despite court ruling

The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has insisted that Governor Hope Uzodimma remains its candidate for Imo West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, despite a Federal High Court judgment declaring former governor Rochas Okorocha the winner of the party’s senatorial primary.

The party maintained its position in a statement issued by its state Publicity Secretary, Onwuasoanya FCC Jones, following Thursday’s judgment by the court in Abuja.

The court had declared Okorocha the winner of the APC primary and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise him as the party’s candidate for the district.

However, Jones insisted that Uzodimma won the primary with the majority of votes cast.

“The party wishes to state without any confusion that His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, remains the candidate of our party for Imo West Senatorial District, having won the primaries of our great party with the overwhelming support of the majority of our party members,” the statement said.

The APC spokesperson said the party’s legal department would review the court proceedings before deciding on its next move.

“The party’s legal department shall study the outcome of a legal intervention in this matter and act accordingly,” he added.

Jones also urged party members and supporters to remain focused and continue working towards the APC’s success across constituencies in Imo State.

“We urge our teeming party members and supporters of our great party to remain focused and undistracted and remain committed to working assiduously for the victory of our party across all constituencies in the state,” he said.

The dispute centres on the APC’s Imo West senatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 elections, with the court’s ruling favouring Okorocha while the party’s state chapter continues to recognise Uzodimma as its candidate.

The state chapter’s position does not, by itself, establish whether the judgment has been appealed or stayed. The supplied report does not provide further details on the party’s legal next steps.
