Nigerian states recorded a 27 per cent increase in internally generated revenue (IGR), reflecting improved tax collection and revenue mobilisation across the country.

The Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), Olusegun Adesokan, disclosed the figures in Abuja, stating that the 23 states generated approximately ₦2.2 trillion between January and June 2026, compared with ₦1.75 trillion recorded during the same period in 2025.

Adesokan attributed the growth to improved tax administration, expansion of the tax base and efforts to ensure that individuals and businesses contribute according to their financial capacity.

He added that about 92 per cent of income earners in the states covered by the report were paying lower personal income tax or no personal income tax under the new tax regime.

He also revealed that 21 states had adopted the harmonised taxes and levies framework developed by the JRB in collaboration with the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.

The framework is designed to consolidate more than 100 taxes, levies and charges into nine categories to reduce multiple taxation and simplify revenue collection.

The JRB said the reforms were intended to improve compliance, protect businesses from overlapping tax demands and strengthen government revenue.

It added that the success of the new tax system would depend on its ability to encourage business growth, create employment and improve the economic well-being of Nigerians.
