Nigerian athletics stars Miracle Ezechukwu and Samson Nathaniel are set to headline more than 850 athletes expected to compete at the 10th anniversary edition of the Athletic Heat Meet in Lagos on Saturday, November 7.
The competition will take place at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, beginning at 8am, as Athletic Heat celebrates a decade of supporting athletics development, discovering emerging talents and providing competitive opportunities for Nigerian athletes.
The anniversary meet will bring together established national team athletes, promising young competitors and grassroots talents across various track and field events.
Ezechukwu is expected to compete in the women’s 100m following an impressive rise in Nigerian athletics. The young sprinter announced herself on the continental stage in 2025 after winning three gold medals at the African U-18 and U-20 Championships held in Abeokuta.
She has continued her progress this year, recording personal bests of 11.15 seconds in the 100m and 22.77 seconds in the 200m. At the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, she finished fourth in the women’s 100m final before helping Nigeria secure gold in the 4x100m relay with a championship-record time of 42.94 seconds.
Nathaniel, meanwhile, is expected to compete in the men’s 400m. The Nigerian quarter-miler has represented the country at the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships and was part of the gold-medal-winning men’s 4x400m relay team at the 2023 African Games in Accra.
The 2026 season has also provided further opportunities for Nathaniel to demonstrate his consistency, having clocked 45.89 seconds at the Addis Ababa Athletics Meet. His personal best in the 400m stands at 45.23 seconds.
Javelin thrower Adams Samuel Kure will also attract attention in the field events after securing bronze at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His throw of 76.01 metres placed him behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and Muhammad Yasir.
With more than 850 athletes expected, the competition will feature a particularly strong turnout in the senior men’s 100m, which has attracted 320 entries. The 32 highest-ranked competitors will advance to four finals, while the top 24 athletes in the women’s event will qualify for the final.
The 400m and 800m races will be organised according to athletes’ season-best times, while the hurdles finals will be limited to six competitors because of equipment availability. The long jump competition will also be conducted in two flights.
Organisers have completed the seeding of events and allocation of bib numbers, with participants advised to check their schedules and assignments through the Roster Athletics application.
The 10th anniversary edition is expected to provide an important competitive platform for established athletes and emerging talents as they assess their form ahead of the National Sports Festival.
