Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has strongly refuted the allegations against him, calling them “fictitious and unsubstantiated.”
Obasa made these comments at a rally held at his Joel Ogunnaike GRA residence in Ikeja, where he addressed his supporters for the first time since his impeachment, Diaspora digital media (DDM) reported.
The ex-Speaker, who served as the head of the legislative body from 2015 until his removal in January 2025, emphasized that the claims of misconduct that led to his ouster were baseless and lacked credible evidence.
Obasa described the process of his impeachment as improper, stating that it was carried out without adhering to the necessary legal procedures.
He further alleged that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State was involved in an orchestrated effort to remove him from office, including the deployment of security agents to disrupt the assembly’s proceedings.
According to Obasa, these agents, numbering in the hundreds, stormed his residences in Agege and Ikeja, where they locked his family members indoors, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
Despite these challenges, Obasa maintained that his removal was not the end of his political journey.
“If I am not speaker, that’s not the end of the world,” Obasa stated.
He also addressed the accusations of corruption, saying that if anyone truly believed he had misused funds, they should be able to present solid evidence to back up their claims.
One of the key allegations against him involved the construction of a gate, which was said to have cost a staggering N16 billion.
Obasa rejected this as outrageous, sarcastically questioning whether a gate could indeed cost that much, especially when it was not something as monumental as the biblical Jericho wall.
Obasa’s impeachment came after a majority vote by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House, with the lawmakers citing allegations of misconduct and other offenses as the grounds for his removal.
His departure from the speaker’s role paved the way for Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, his deputy, to assume the position, making her the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obasa, a member of the House since 2007, had built a significant political career over the years, and his sudden removal has sparked considerable controversy and debate.
Despite the political upheaval, Obasa’s supporters continue to rally behind him, convinced that the accusations are politically motivated and part of a larger scheme to undermine his influence in the state.
