Victim recounts traumatic experience after being gang-raped, robbed in Lagos

A 22-year-old victim, identified only as Bimpe (not her real name), shared her distressing experience during an interview with The Diaspora digital media (DDM) correspondent.

She recounted how she was attacked by three men in the Igando area of Lagos State and later abandoned after they also robbed her.

According to the victim, the incident occurred on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

She had left Ayobo around 8 p.m. and boarded a bus heading to Igando.

Rather than taking a vehicle from the park, she entered a bus she found on the road after alighting from a tricycle.

The driver, who was calling for passengers going to Igando, seemed to be in a hurry and insisted he could not take any more passengers.

Feeling rushed, she quickly got in.

Inside the bus, she saw only the driver and one other passenger.

A short while after departing Ayobo, they picked up another person.

The victim was using her phone at first but soon put it away as she often experienced motion sickness while traveling.

To avoid discomfort, she placed the phone inside her bag and focused on steadying herself.

After some time, she began feeling disoriented.

Not long after the third passenger entered the bus, she dozed off.

When she woke up, it was already around 11 p.m., and she found herself behind the Igando BRT terminal.

She was in pain and disoriented, with severe discomfort throughout her body.

Her belongings were missing, and she experienced soreness, making her realize that she had been harmed.

The victim said that the three men who attacked her were still inside the bus when she regained consciousness.

As soon as she woke up, they pulled out an axe and threatened her.

They warned that if she refused to cooperate, they would strike her with the weapon or harm her.

According to the victim, the men began making incantations, which made her believe they were part of a cult group.

She was terrified and in shock, unable to process much of what they were saying.

However, they ordered her to unlock her phone and access her bank application.

Under duress, she transferred all the money in her account, approximately N500,000, to them.

After robbing her, the assailants abandoned the victim at the scene and fled.

She was left in pain and confusion, struggling to comprehend what had happened.

The victim’s story highlights concerns about security in Lagos and the risks many people, especially women, face while commuting at night.

Authorities are yet to confirm any arrests related to the case as investigations continue.
