Lagos task force arrests 44 traders, cracks down on illegal street trading

No fewer than 44 traders were arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Task Force for alleged illegal street trading at Oke Bridge, Mile 2.

The enforcement operation was part of renewed efforts to maintain order and ensure free movement along major highways in the state.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), the Director of Public Affairs for the task force, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Tuesday.

He explained that the traders were apprehended for illegally occupying roadside spaces in violation of Lagos State’s environmental laws.

The enforcement team, led by the agency’s chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, acted in response to complaints from motorists and commuters.

Many had reported issues of obstruction, traffic congestion, and environmental hazards caused by illegal trading.

Akerele stressed that the agency remains committed to restoring order in public spaces across the state.

He noted that despite repeated enforcement efforts, some traders continue to defy regulations by occupying major roads and pedestrian walkways.

“Despite several warnings and enforcement exercises, certain individuals persist in illegal trading, causing obstruction and environmental concerns,” he stated.

He reiterated that the operation was part of a broader initiative to ensure compliance with state regulations.

The chairman emphasized that the agency would intensify efforts to enhance safety and ease movement for all Lagosians.

The task force warned that traders who continued to operate in unauthorized locations risked arrest and confiscation of their goods.

Akerele highlighted that illegal trading does not only disrupt public movement but also poses security threats.

He raised concerns about criminal activities associated with street trading, especially in areas prone to traffic robberies.

“We have observed that some criminal elements disguise themselves as traders while engaging in unlawful activities,” he said.

He assured residents that the agency was prepared to clamp down on all illegal activities in public spaces.

According to Akerele, recent incidents of traffic robberies in the area made stricter enforcement necessary.

He warned that security agencies would no longer tolerate actions that compromise public safety.

To sustain order, the agency urged residents to report suspicious activities through its official feedback channels.

Authorities encouraged citizens to collaborate with security agencies to ensure continuous peace and security in the state.

The operation at Oke Bridge was part of a series of crackdowns on illegal street trading across Lagos.

In December 2024, a similar enforcement exercise led to the arrest of 17 suspects in different parts of the state.

During those raids, law enforcement officers recovered illicit substances such as Colorado, Indian hemp, narcotics, and other controlled drugs.

The Lagos State Task Force has consistently warned against illegal trading in public spaces.

Officials have maintained that unauthorized trading contributes to congestion, insecurity, and environmental degradation.

Despite past enforcement efforts, many traders have continued to operate in restricted areas.

The agency has vowed to sustain its crackdown on unauthorized trading to restore order in the metropolis.
