In a major development, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that Nigeria may reassess USAID’s operational status if allegations are confirmed.

Akpabio made this declaration during a plenary session on February 19, 2025.

He stressed the need for Nigeria to take a firm stance if the claims prove to be true.

He asserted, “If it is true that USAID has been funding Boko Haram, we have no business allowing them here.”

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), his statement underscores the gravity of the allegations and potential repercussions for USAID’s operations in Nigeria.

The controversy stems from claims made by U.S. Congressman Perry Scott.

He accused USAID of providing financial support to terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram.

The insurgent group has wreaked havoc in northeastern Nigeria.

They have caused widespread destruction and loss of life.

Akpabio emphasized that such allegations must be thoroughly investigated.

He stated that the matter directly impacts Nigeria’s national security.

In response to these claims, the Nigerian Senate has summoned security and intelligence agency heads.

They will conduct a comprehensive probe into the matter.

Akpabio reiterated that Nigeria must take decisive steps if USAID is found culpable.

He mentioned seeking compensation for any damage caused by its alleged actions.

The call for urgent action was initiated by Senator Mohammed Ndume.

Ndume represents Borno South Senatorial District.

He raised an Order of Urgent National Security in the Senate.

Ndume urged his colleagues to address the issue with the seriousness it deserves.

He highlighted the immense suffering inflicted on Nigerians by Boko Haram’s violent activities.

Akpabio reaffirmed that the Senate would not overlook credible evidence linking USAID to terrorism financing.

He noted that the accusations, if verified, would warrant reconsidering Nigeria’s cooperation with the agency.

“This is not a matter we can ignore,” Akpabio said.

He stressed that Nigeria must act swiftly and decisively.

The allegations have sparked intense debate among lawmakers.

Many senators expressed concerns about implications for Nigeria’s international partnerships.

Some senators suggested engaging the United States government directly.

They seek clarification before making any drastic decisions.

However, Akpabio maintained that Nigeria’s primary responsibility is safeguarding its citizens and territorial integrity.

He assured that security agencies would be given full backing for an independent investigation.

He promised that findings would be handled transparently and responsibly.

Akpabio emphasized that Nigeria must remain vigilant against external influences undermining its security.

“We must not compromise on the safety of our people,” he declared.

He stated that necessary measures would be taken if the allegations hold any truth.

The Nigerian government is expected to engage in diplomatic discussions with U.S. officials.

The Senate awaits the outcome of the investigation.

For now, the fate of USAID’s operations in Nigeria remains uncertain.

Further developments in the probe will determine the next course of action.
