Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu, a prominent ally of Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s last election, has resigned from the ‘Obidient Movement.’
The Obidient Movement refers to supporters of Peter Obi and his political ideology.
The resignation comes amid growing controversy surrounding her role in the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) campaign during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The BBOG campaign gained global attention following the abduction of over 300 Chibok schoolgirls by Boko Haram insurgents in April 2014.
However, recent allegations by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry have reignited debates about the campaign’s funding and motives.
During a hearing titled “The War on Waste: Stamping Out the Scourge of Improper Payments and Fraud” on February 13, 2025, Perry claimed that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had spent $697 million annually funding terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS.
Perry’s allegations sparked outrage on social media, with some Nigerians accusing the BBOG campaign of being a tool used by USAID to destabilize Jonathan’s administration.
Critics have called on Yesufu to address the allegations, with some demanding an apology or explanation.
In response, Yesufu denied any involvement with USAID or external funding for the BBOG campaign.
She emphasized her commitment to working with like-minded Nigerians to promote good governance, accountability, and transparency.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she stated, “Aisha Yesufu is currently working with like-minded Nigerians who are not afraid to put in the work for Nigeria to be a great nation.”
Despite her denials, the controversy has taken a toll on her reputation.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Yesufu voluntarily resigned from the Obidient Movement to prevent further damage to both her image and the movement.
“Aisha is no longer with the movement. She voluntarily resigned following the controversy that trailed the revelation of the Republican Congressman,” the source revealed exclusively to an online news website News Band.
The Obidient Movement, which gained momentum during Peter Obi’s presidential campaign, has been a significant force in Nigerian politics, advocating for transparency and accountability in governance.
