Kebbi varsity officials under fire as meningitis claims six student
The management of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), has confirmed six student deaths from meningitis.
In a statement on Saturday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Ango, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss.
He conveyed the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. B. G. Danshehu’s sadness and extended condolences to the families of the deceased students.
Ango said the university took immediate action upon detecting the initial signs of the meningitis outbreak on campus.
A special committee, led by Prof. Balarabe Adamu Isah, was formed to investigate and control the disease’s spread.
The university promptly notified the Kebbi State Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Higher Education.
A stakeholders’ meeting was held, involving WHO, UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières, and other health professionals.
KSUSTA implemented key measures, including medical support, sanitation improvements, and a health awareness campaign.
Vaccination efforts were also launched in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, and MSF to curb the disease.
Despite these efforts, six students lost their lives, leaving the university community in mourning.
“We deeply regret these losses and sympathize with the affected families,” Ango stated.
The management reassured parents and guardians of its commitment to ensuring student safety and well-being.
KSUSTA urged concerned individuals to contact the Public Relations Office for updates on the situation.
“We appreciate the support of our community as we work to overcome this crisis,” Ango concluded.
