Entrepreneur Urges Federal Government to Declare Agriculture State of Emergency

Abimbola Adeyemi, the Chief Executive Officer of Crown Fit Cocktails and More, has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in agriculture to tackle rising food prices, food scarcity, and hunger, emphasizing the need for enhanced food security.

During the third edition of the Crown Fit Food and Beverages Exhibition in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, Adeyemi expressed regret over Nigeria’s inability to feed itself despite possessing vast arable land and human resources.

Citing data from Statista, which indicates that between 2020 and 2022, an average of 21.3% of Nigeria’s population experienced food shortages, Adeyemi highlighted the economic challenges resulting from neglecting the agriculture sector over the years.

She urged the government to make agriculture more appealing to youths by offering interest-free loans, providing farm inputs, training, and equipment. Adeyemi stressed the urgency of declaring a state of emergency in the agriculture sector, expecting a swift turnaround for the benefit of all.

“The removal of the subsidy and the state of the economy have led to a surge in the prices of these commodities. Palliatives such as access to interest-free loans for our farmers will help cushion the harsh economic policies currently in place in the country with our farmers being the worst hit,” she remarked.

Adeyemi emphasized the importance of Nigerians growing what they eat, urging the government to support made-in-Nigeria products to boost the local market and revive the economy. The exhibition, which attracted hundreds of farmers, food vendors, and event participants, showcased the organization’s efforts in training and employing over 100 young Nigerians for self-sustainability in the food and beverages sector.
