Ukraine claims responsibility of attack on Kursk

Ukraine has claimed responsibility for striking a drone command center in Russia’s Kursk region, as tensions rise amid renewed efforts to breach the Russian border.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the target was situated close to the Russian village of Tyotkino.

This announcement came alongside numerous reports from Russian military bloggers suggesting that Ukrainian troops have been making fresh attempts to cross into Russian territory.

These bloggers posted images, yet to be independently verified, purportedly showing Ukrainian military vehicles breaking through tank barriers at the border.

The reported incidents come just weeks after Russian officials asserted in April that they had regained full control over the region.

However, Kyiv has rejected this claim, insisting that Ukrainian forces remain operational inside Russian territory.

According to the military bloggers, the border assault intensified on Monday when Ukrainian forces launched missiles and deployed specialized vehicles designed to navigate and clear minefields.

Blogger RVvoenkor, quoted by Reuters, described a coordinated operation that began with nighttime rocket strikes on bridges.

It was followed by a morning ground assault led by armored groups.

He noted that mine-clearing vehicles initiated the push by creating paths through the minefields, which were then used by armored vehicles carrying troops.

He described the situation as an intense and ongoing battle at the border.

Ukraine’s Defense Forces released a statement on Monday, declaring that, nine months after launching operations in the Kursk region, their troops continue to maintain a military presence within Russian territory.

The statement reaffirms Ukraine’s position that it has not fully withdrawn, despite Moscow’s previous claims to the contrary.

While the Russian government has not officially responded to these latest developments.

Several Russian military bloggers have reportedly published maps indicating that Ukrainian forces are attempting to cross the border at two points near Tyotkino.

This is the same general area where the drone command unit was reportedly targeted.

The presence of Ukrainian forces so close to Tyotkino suggests that the area remains highly contested and unstable.

In a related development, authorities in Sumy,  have urged residents in two local settlements to evacuate.

Sumy is located just 12 kilometers from Tyotkino on the Ukrainian side of the border.

This warning, reported by Reuters, indicates growing concerns about the potential for the conflict to spill over into more densely populated civilian areas.

The evacuation call highlights the risks facing those living close to the front lines of this protracted conflict.

Ukraine originally launched its surprise incursion into the Kursk region in August 2024.

The stated objective at the time was to establish a buffer zone to safeguard Sumy and surrounding territories from Russian attacks.

In addition to its defensive purposes, Kyiv also aimed to use the occupied territory as leverage in potential future negotiations with Moscow.

The continuing operations and recent escalation suggest that Ukraine still sees strategic value in maintaining a foothold in the area.

These developments signal that the conflict along the Russian-Ukrainian border remains fluid and dangerous.

Both sides have reportedly continued to engage in active military maneuvers.

Despite Russia’s claims of full control over Kursk, Ukraine’s actions and statements suggest a different reality on the ground.

The latest reports, if confirmed, would indicate a significant escalation and a possible shift in Ukraine’s strategy toward more assertive cross-border operations.

As the situation evolves, the potential for further destabilization remains high, especially in contested regions like Tyotkino and Sumy, which lie at the heart of this ongoing military struggle
