Police kill one, recover vehicle after attack that claimed 30 lives in Imo

Sequel to the attack that took the lives of about 30 individuals, the Nigeria Police Force Imo state command has neutralized one criminal suspect and recovered stolen vehicles.

The incidence which led to public uproar where suspected IPOB members in the early hours of Thursday shot sporadically killing many people and burnt trucks and cars along Okigwe/Onuimo road had attracted heavy counter attack by security agents.

This was contained in a Press Statement on 9th May 2025 by the Command’s spokesman, Henry Okoye.

He states: “Following the violent attack on commuters in Onuimo and parts of Okigwe by hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN in the early hours of 8th May 2025, operatives of the Imo State Police Command, in synergy with other security agencies, launched an intelligence-led operation in Abor-Umulolo, Okigwe LGA of Imo State.

“The hoodlums on sighting the operatives, opened fire but were overwhelmed by the superior fire power of the operative.

“In the ensuing gun duel, one of the hoodlums was neutralized, while others fled with varying degrees of bullet wounds.

“A snatched Toyota Corolla with registration number ENU 283 CN and an HP laptop were recovered from the scene.

“The body of the neutralized suspect has been deposited at the morgue, while the recovered items are in police custody for further investigation.

“Meanwhile, an intensive manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.

“The Command urges residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or via emergency lines 0803 477 3600, 08148024755.

“Further updates will be provided as investigations continue”, the statement read.

While condemning the attack in the strongest terms and describing it as a cowardly act of terror, CP Aboki Danjuma called on Imolites to remain calm, law-abiding, and security conscious.

He further urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information to aid ongoing operations.

“The Imo State Police Command, together with its security partners, remains fully committed to restoring normalcy and safeguarding the lives and property of all residents and road users across the state”, Okoye stated.
