As Enugu State approaches the second anniversary of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, several major transport and tourism initiatives are set for official launch.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that these ambitious projects, which include the Enugu Air initiative, a CNG-powered mass transit system, and new transport terminals, are part of the administration’s broader plan to modernize infrastructure and boost tourism across the state.

The announcement was made during a weekend press briefing at the Government House in Enugu, following a meeting of the State Executive Council.

Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, revealed that commercial operations of Enugu Air would commence with three aircraft.

According to him, two of the aircraft are already in the state, while the third is expected to arrive before the end of May.

He emphasized that the launch would coincide with the administration’s two-year milestone.

Ozor also disclosed that 50 new CNG buses have arrived and are currently parked at Okpara Square.

An additional 50 buses are expected in the coming weeks to complete the initial 100-bus fleet.

He noted that these buses will be deployed for commercial services before the end of May.

To complement the mass transit system, the state government has constructed five ultramodern bus terminals.

These terminals are located at Holy Ghost (two terminals), Gariki, Abakpa, and Nsukka.

All terminals are scheduled to begin operations by May 29.

Ozor further announced that the state would roll out the Enugu Smart Transport Programme within the next 150 days.

This programme includes the introduction of over 2,000 electric vehicles and the establishment of an electric and CNG automotive manufacturing plant in the state.

The Nsude Pyramid will feature Nigeria’s longest canopy walkway, stretching 600 metres.

Ngwo Pine Forest will host the country’s first zipline, which will measure 300 metres.

Additional facilities in Ngwo will include a large and a smaller rotunda for tourism activities.

A major monument, the Cross of Hope, is planned for Okpatu.

The cross will be located 580 metres above sea level and will stand 50 metres tall.

Altogether, it will reach a height of 630 metres above sea level and include 15 floors with a lift.

Dame Madueke added that Awhum Waterfall will also have a second canopy walkway and a boardwalk to conserve the natural ecosystem.

Other planned sites include the Akwuke/Atakkwu Waterpark and the Ovu Lake Golf and Resort in Akpawfu.

All tourist centres will be powered by renewable energy and include food courts and experience centres.

Tour buses are expected to arrive soon to ease tourist mobility.

In preparation for hosting the 2026 National Sports Festival, major renovations are scheduled for the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, confirmed that work on these sites will begin by June.

He also announced the upcoming commissioning of a state-of-the-art Animation Lab for young people in Enugu.

The lab is reportedly ready for launch.

Ekweremadu added that over 2,100 young people trained in December 2024 will receive empowerment packages on August 12, which marks International Youth Day.
