Nigeria’s leadership mandate incomplete – Obasanjo
DDM News

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that the task of national development and leadership in Nigeria remains far from complete.
He made this statement at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Abuja during the public presentation of the autobiography written by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the book, titled “Being True to Myself,” chronicles the political journey, public service, and personal reflections of Lamido, a prominent politician and one-time Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The occasion brought together a diverse array of Nigeria’s political elite, cutting across various party affiliations, who gathered in Abuja to honour one of their own.
Obasanjo, in his remarks, emphasized that the Nigeria of collective dreams and aspirations is yet to be realized.
He noted that the nation is still a work in progress, and leaders, both past and present, must continue their efforts to move the country forward.
According to the former president, “Nigeria that we are working for, we haven’t gotten there.
And I believe it is the responsibility of each of us to ensure that we get there. Our job is not finished until we are finished.”
The event served as both a celebration of Lamido’s contributions to national politics and a moment of sober reflection on the state of governance and leadership in Nigeria.
Among the dignitaries present were former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar and Namadi Sambo; Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; and former National Security Adviser, Lt. General Aliyu Gusau (rtd).
Also in attendance were former Senate Presidents Anyim Pius Anyim and Ken Nnamani.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event, also delivered a goodwill message.
Dr. Iyiorchia Ayu, former National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), served as the official book reviewer and praised Lamido for his political integrity and consistency over the years.
Lamido, who governed Jigawa State from 2007 to 2015, is widely regarded as a politician with deep ideological roots and a strong commitment to the founding values of the PDP.
Before his governorship, he served as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2003 under President Obasanjo, during which he played a crucial role in rebuilding Nigeria’s international image after decades of military rule.
The book launch was not only a literary unveiling but also a platform for political discourse, historical reflection, and a renewed call for unity and accountability in leadership.
Obasanjo’s words served as a timely reminder of the unfulfilled promises of governance and the need for leaders to remain committed to nation-building.
Observers at the event noted that such gatherings of senior political figures could foster national healing and strengthen public trust if translated into tangible policy actions and patriotic collaboration.
