Gas explosion rocks port harcourt, destroys vehicles and worship centre

A deadly gas explosion rocked Port Harcourt on Friday 16th,2025, sparking panic and destruction in the Airforce Road area.
The blast occurred at Nobet Filling Station, near a residential and worship zone in the Rivers State capital.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion happened around noon, sending thick smoke and flames into the air.
More than 10 vehicles were burnt beyond recognition as the fire spread rapidly across the compound.
A nearby worship centre was also affected, as fire swept through surrounding structures with fierce intensity.
According to onlookers, fabrication work was ongoing near a gas tank buried within the premises.
The fire reportedly began when the underground gas tank ignited during civil works carried out close to it.
A pump attendant at the station suffered severe burns and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Residents said the loud blast was heard several streets away, causing panic in the area.
One witness, Chinedu Ogbonna, said, “We saw fire rise with a loud bang. People started running for safety.”
The Federal Fire Service and other private firefighting teams quickly responded to the emergency.
Eyewitnesses praised their timely intervention, which helped quench the fire before it spread to more properties.
Firefighters battled the flames for hours before bringing the situation under control.
No life was reported lost as at press time, but many were left in shock and confusion.
Security operatives arrived later to cordon off the area and restore order.
Residents called for a thorough investigation to determine what caused the explosion and how it could have been avoided.
Questions have risen over the safety standards of gas storage in commercial areas.
Many are asking why a gas tank was buried underground at a public filling station.
Experts say such storage methods require strict supervision and approval from regulatory authorities.
Community leaders have urged the Rivers State Government to enforce stronger regulations on gas handling and storage.
They also called on the Department of Petroleum Resources to inspect all gas plants in residential zones.
As of now, authorities have yet to release an official statement on the explosion.
