on

Imagine a small group of determined soldiers launching a surprise attack on a much larger enemy force, resulting in one of the most significant defeats in African military history.

This is the story of the Abagana Ambush, a pivotal event in the Nigerian Civil War.

On March 31, 1968, the Biafran guerrilla troops, led by Major Jonathan Uchendu, set a trap for the Nigerian 2nd Division, led by Col. Murtala Muhammed, on the Enugu-Onitsha highway.

The Nigerian army convoy, consisting of 106 vehicles, including troop carriers, fuel tankers, and armored cars, was ambushed by the Biafran forces.

The Biafrans used a locally made rocket called Ogbunigwe, which was launched at a fuel tanker, causing a massive explosion that incinerated men and equipment.

The ambush was a disaster for the Nigerian army.

Over 500 troops were killed, and some accounts estimate the death toll to be as high as 6,000. The Biafran forces also destroyed 350 tons of Nigerian army equipment.

The ambush was a significant blow to the Nigerian army, boosting Biafran morale and temporarily halting their advance.

The Abagana Ambush was a remarkable victory for the Biafran forces, showcasing their bravery and strategic thinking.

The ambush gave hope to both Biafran soldiers and civilians, and it remains a celebrated event in Nigerian history.

Col. Murtala Muhammed was relieved of his command, and the ambush marked a turning point in the war.

Well, as we all know, the Biafran Army did not win war at the end.
