Just in: Peter Obi slams Tinubu for ignoring Yelwata massacre
DDM News

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has lambasted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for failing to visit the grief-stricken community of Yelwata in Benue State following a deadly massacre that claimed over 120 lives.
Obi, who visited the area recently to sympathize with the families of the victims, expressed disappointment that the Commander-in-Chief did not consider it important to personally assess the situation or offer condolences on the ground.
According to him, citing poor road conditions as a reason for not visiting the devastated community is completely unacceptable and unbecoming of a leader.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the attack on Yelwata was allegedly carried out by suspected armed herdsmen terrorists who invaded the community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The massacre, which occurred in early June, left hundreds of residents homeless and scores of families grieving the loss of loved ones, including women and children.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horrors of the coordinated onslaught, with houses burnt and residents chased down while attempting to flee.
Despite the gravity of the tragedy, President Tinubu has yet to pay a condolence visit to the area, sparking outrage and disappointment among citizens and political figures alike.
Mr. Obi, who has built a reputation for his hands-on approach and people-centered politics, condemned what he described as insensitivity from the federal government.
He stressed that a true leader should not hide behind excuses when citizens are under attack, especially when lives are being lost.
Obi further argued that security challenges and infrastructure problems should not be a justification for neglecting the very people a leader swore to protect.
The former Anambra State governor also called on the federal government to deploy decisive action in addressing the insecurity plaguing Benue and other parts of the country.
He emphasized the need for proactive governance that responds swiftly to emergencies and prioritizes the lives and welfare of the people.
Obi’s remarks have reignited national discussions on government accountability and the handling of recurring attacks in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, which has long suffered from farmer-herder conflicts and ethno-religious violence.
With the trauma of the Yelwata massacre still fresh, many Nigerians continue to demand justice, security, and leadership that does not turn its back on suffering communities.
