UNDP, KOICA open new markets in Ugandan to transform refugee, local lives

On June 20, 2025, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced the successful completion of new markets in Uganda’s Adjumani, Obongi, and Lamwo districts.
During a press conference, officials highlighted how these markets are transforming lives for refugees and host communities.
The event, live-streamed on UNDP’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, showcased the project’s tangible benefits.
With support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the markets provide more than just trading spaces—they foster unity and economic growth.
Each facility features clean water, sanitation, secure stalls, and designated sections for different goods.
Additionally, sustainable green energy powers the markets, reflecting a commitment to eco-friendly development.
These markets have quickly become safe, dignified spaces where refugees and locals trade side by side.
The smooth interactions between both groups are no accident but the result of intentional planning to strengthen social bonds.
Voices from the Community: Stories of Change
For women like Arizio Jane Eberu and Lazea Christine, the markets have been life-changing.
Jane, a fish seller, now works under better lighting and improved security, allowing her to return home earlier.
Christine, who once struggled with makeshift stalls, now dreams of expanding her business thanks to secure storage.
“This market has changed everything,” said Jane, a South Sudanese refugee.
“With proper lighting, fencing, and lockable stalls, our goods are safer, and work is more comfortable.”
Christine added, “I no longer haul goods daily or endure the scorching sun. Now, I can stock more items and grow my business.”
Local vendor Olany Stephen also shared his success.
After years of selling on dusty roadsides, he now operates from a clean shop. His earnings have tripled since joining the market.
“Before, my best sales were UGX 45,000,” he said. “Now, I make over UGX 150,000 on busy days.”
A Blueprint for Sustainable Development
These markets prove how infrastructure can build resilience.
By offering stability and opportunity, they help displaced individuals recover and thrive.
The project also highlights the power of collaboration between governments and development partners.
Moving forward, UNDP remains committed to empowering vulnerable communities through risk-informed development.
The markets stand as a model for how thoughtful planning and partnerships can create lasting change.
As UNDP emphasized, this initiative is about restoring dignity and hope—one market at a time.
