NCS warns public about fake recruitment, auction scams

Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urgently warned citizens about a rise in online scams involving fake recruitment and auction offers.

During a press conference on Friday, 20 June 2025, officials revealed that fraudsters are exploiting the agency’s name to deceive job seekers and bidders.

Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS National Public Relations Officer, expressed deep concern over criminals impersonating senior Customs officers.

Specifically, scammers create fake social media profiles using the names and photos of high-ranking officials, including the Comptroller-General and retired personnel.

“We have noticed a troubling increase in fraudulent accounts claiming to represent Customs leaders,” Maiwada stated.

He clarified that the NCS never conducts recruitment or auctions on social media, labeling such schemes as illegal and damaging to the agency’s reputation.

To combat these scams, the NCS recently arrested Mr. Okoli Okana Boniface, who allegedly manipulated recruitment processes while posing as an aide to Nigeria’s First Lady.

Maiwada confirmed that investigations exposed this as a deliberate attempt to corrupt the hiring system.

Furthermore, he stressed the agency’s zero-tolerance stance toward fraud, noting that additional probes are ongoing.

Maiwada urged the public to verify all recruitment and auction details through official NCS channels only.

“Ignore unsolicited offers from unverified sources,” he advised.

“Rely solely on our authorized platforms for accurate updates.”

The Comptroller-General reinforced the agency’s commitment to exposing and prosecuting fraudsters.

Citizens were also encouraged to report suspicious accounts impersonating Customs officials.
