PDP ends chaos: Anyanwu reinstated as National Secretary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) NWC has finally resolved its bitter leadership crisis by reaffirming Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.

This decisive action follows months of internal wrangling that threatened to tear the opposition party apart.

During a tense press briefing on Wednesday, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum declared the NWC’s unanimous decision.

He stressed that the move reinforces the party’s commitment to unity and strict adherence to constitutional principles.

Anyanwu, a former Imo East senator, initially secured the secretary role at the 2021 PDP National Convention.

However, chaos erupted in 2023 when he became the party’s gubernatorial candidate—violating PDP rules barring dual officeholding.

Fierce disagreements erupted, triggering lawsuits and rival factions demanding his removal.

An acting secretary was briefly appointed, deepening confusion and fueling internal divisions.

The crisis left the party’s leadership in disarray at a critical time.

After Anyanwu lost the Imo governorship race to APC’s Hope Uzodinma, his allies pushed fiercely for his reinstatement.

Following intense legal scrutiny and high-stakes negotiations, the NWC finally greenlit his dramatic return.

Analysts view this as a calculated bid to stabilize the PDP before the 2027 elections.

The decision also signals the NWC’s urgent push to mend fractures and reclaim its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition force.

Party insiders now hope this resolution will spark a new era of cohesion.

With the leadership battle over, the PDP can finally focus on rebuilding—and mounting a formidable challenge against the ruling party.

Observers warn, however, that lingering resentment could still undermine progress.

If the PDP fails to fully reconcile warring factions, this hard-won peace may prove short-lived.

The stakes couldn’t be higher.

The party’s future now hinges on translating this decision into genuine unity.

For Nigeria’s opposition, this moment could either mark a fresh start—or the beginning of an irreversible decline.

The clock is ticking.
