Spain moved within touching distance of lifting their second FIFA World Cup trophy after producing a disciplined and dominant performance to defeat France 2-0 in a thrilling semi-final at Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday night. The victory sends La Roja into their first World Cup final since winning the tournament in South Africa in 2010 and extends their remarkable unbeaten run under head coach Luis de la Fuente.

Facing a French side packed with world class talent, including captain Kylian Mbappe, Spain showed composure, tactical intelligence and attacking quality to control the contest from start to finish.

From the opening whistle, Spain looked determined to impose themselves on the game. Their midfield trio dominated possession while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal constantly troubled the French defence with his pace, close control and fearless attacking play.

France initially attempted to absorb the pressure before launching quick counterattacks through Mbappe and Michael Olise, but Spain’s defensive organisation prevented the 2018 world champions from creating meaningful opportunities.

The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when Yamal dazzled his way into the penalty area before being brought down by France defender Lucas Digne. The referee pointed immediately to the penalty spot after judging the challenge to be illegal.

Experienced striker Mikel Oyarzabal stepped forward with confidence and calmly sent goalkeeper Mike Maignan the wrong way to give Spain a deserved 1-0 lead. The goal was Oyarzabal’s fifth of the tournament and continued his outstanding goalscoring form throughout the World Cup.

The goal further lifted Spain’s confidence as Rodri, Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz dictated the tempo in midfield, forcing France to chase the ball for long spells.

Lamine Yamal nearly doubled Spain’s advantage before half-time after combining brilliantly with Dani Olmo, but France managed to scramble the danger away following a desperate defensive block.

France suffered another setback midway through the opening period when defender William Saliba was forced off through injury, disrupting Didier Deschamps’ defensive plans and forcing an early tactical reshuffle.

Despite trailing, France struggled to find any rhythm going forward. Mbappe was closely marked throughout the encounter, while Spain’s defensive partnership remained composed whenever the Real Madrid forward attempted to accelerate into dangerous positions.

Goalkeeper Unai Simon also enjoyed another excellent evening between the posts, commanding his penalty area confidently and dealing comfortably with France’s limited attacking threats.

After the restart, France pushed more players into attack in search of an equaliser, but doing so left spaces behind their defence.

Spain capitalised brilliantly in the 58th minute through an outstanding team move.

Following a slick passing combination involving Dani Olmo, defender Pedro Porro surged forward before producing a composed finish beyond Maignan to double Spain’s advantage and leave France with a mountain to climb. The goal effectively sealed Spain’s place in the World Cup final and earned Porro widespread praise for another influential performance.

Deschamps responded with several substitutions in an effort to revive France’s hopes, introducing fresh attacking options and increasing the tempo during the closing stages.

However, Spain’s defensive discipline never wavered.

The European champions maintained their compact shape, frustrated every French attack and restricted Les Bleus to very few clear opportunities. France did not register a serious effort on target until the closing stages as Spain comfortably managed the remainder of the contest.

Rodri once again demonstrated why he remains one of the world’s finest midfielders, controlling possession and shielding the defence with remarkable composure. Alongside him, Marc Cucurella, Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsi produced outstanding defensive displays to neutralise one of international football’s most dangerous attacking lineups.

Teenager Lamine Yamal also enhanced his growing reputation with another mature performance on the biggest stage. Although he did not score, his direct running won the crucial penalty and continually stretched the French defence throughout the match.

For France, the defeat ended hopes of reaching a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final. Mbappe and his teammates entered the tournament among the favourites but were ultimately outplayed by a Spanish side that looked sharper in every department.

Spain will now prepare for Sunday’s World Cup final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final between England and Argentina. Confidence within Luis de la Fuente’s squad will be high after another complete performance that showcased their attacking flair, defensive resilience and championship mentality.

If Spain reproduce this level of performance in the final, they will have an excellent opportunity to add a second FIFA World Cup title to their history and crown what has already been an unforgettable tournament.
