Federal Government Distributes Life Jackets to Taraba State

To boost safety on Taraba waterways, the Federal Government distributed life jackets through the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry.

Moreover, partnering with Taraba State, the initiative targets river-reliant communities, enhancing safe transportation for both business and travel.

During the ceremony in Jalingo, stakeholders witnessed the event, marking progress toward improved safety for inland water navigation.

Meanwhile, representing the Minister, Hussieni Shettima stressed continued federal dedication to safety through innovation, conservation, and coordinated stakeholder collaboration.

He also expressed optimism that combining federal and state efforts would significantly reduce boating accidents on Nigeria’s busy inland rivers.

In addition, ministry spokesperson Anastasia Ogbonna confirmed thousands depending on Taraba’s rivers would directly benefit from this essential support.

These river systems—including Benue, Donga, and Taraba—remain economic lifelines; thus, protective equipment ensures both safety and sustainable regional development opportunities.

The new life jackets should give commuters and traders greater peace of mind as they navigate these busy waterways.

This latest move forms part of the Federal Government’s larger campaign to minimize accidents on Nigeria’s inland waters.

Last August, the earth beneath Zip Town suddenly collapsed, erasing homes, schools, clinics, and mosques along River Benue’s banks.

As a result, the entire community vanished without warning, and buildings silently crumbled into the muddy depths of the swollen river.

Now, only the silt-heavy River Benue remains, roaring where a thriving town once stood with vibrant, purposeful life.

In its place, displaced families reside in thatch shelters, clinging to ancestral land despite worsening hardship and haunting silence.

Meanwhile, government support remains invisible—no tents, no clinics, no emergency aid—just a growing void of neglect and despair.

By providing essential safety equipment, authorities hope to reduce fatalities and encourage more people to trust and use water-based transport.

The initiative also highlights the importance of collaboration between different levels of government in tackling longstanding safety challenges.

The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy continues to put the safety and well-being of waterway users at the forefront of its agenda.

With this distribution of life jackets, the government is sending a clear message: the safety of every citizen matters.

As more people witness the benefits of these efforts, confidence in waterway transport is expected to grow, paving the way for a safer and more prosperous future for Taraba State and beyond.
