Abuja, Nigeria – Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the former governor of Kano State, has resigned from his position as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing health reasons.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Ganduje made the announcement on Friday, stating that he was stepping down to focus on his well-being after consultations with family and political associates.

According to party sources, the APC’s National Vice Chairman is expected to take over in an acting capacity until the party’s national convention, scheduled for December.

Ganduje was appointed APC National Chairman in August 2023, following the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

His emergence was viewed as a strategic move to consolidate support in Nigeria’s North-West region, a stronghold for the ruling party and Ganduje’s political base.

However, Ganduje’s tenure was not without controversy.

His time in office was overshadowed by lingering allegations of corruption from his days as governor.

Civil society organisations and some internal party critics consistently raised concerns about his continued leadership, questioning the party’s commitment to transparency and integrity.

Although Ganduje cited health challenges as the reason for his resignation, analysts believe political pressure from within the APC may have also influenced his decision.

Some insiders suggest that key stakeholders were becoming increasingly uneasy about his presence at the helm of the party.

His resignation opens the door for a leadership transition ahead of the APC’s December convention, where a permanent chairman is expected to be elected.

In the meantime, party leaders have urged unity and discipline to maintain stability within the ruling party.
