NEC Chaos: ‘One Man Cannot Hold Nigeria to Ransom,’ Say PDP Staff

Tensions escalated within the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday as internal leadership crises disrupted the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and triggered strong reactions from party staff.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that aggrieved staff at the PDP’s Wadata Plaza Secretariat in Abuja voiced frustration over the deadlock, declaring that “one man cannot hold Nigeria to ransom” amid deepening factional divisions.

Their outburst came as heavy security forces were deployed around the premises, causing confusion and halting key party gatherings.

The core of the crisis centers on the disputed scheduling of the landmark NEC meeting.

While Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, and several National Working Committee (NWC) members insisted on holding the meeting as planned, acting National Chairman, Illiya Damagum, claimed statutory grounds for postponement.

In its place, Damagum’s faction called for an “Expanded National Caucus Meeting” on the same day, arguing it would foster broader consultation.

The situation at Wadata Plaza was tense. Security personnel, including the police and civil defence corps, blocked surrounding roads and restricted access to the premises.

The heightened security presence also led to the relocation of the scheduled Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting.

Insiders within the party described the police presence as a response to the deepening divisions between rival factions.

The tension reflects not just a leadership dispute but also the breakdown of internal conflict resolution within the PDP.

Staff members expressed deep disappointment over the situation, warning that the actions of a few individuals were undermining democratic processes within both the party and the nation.

The statement, “One man cannot hold Nigeria to ransom,” captured the growing concern that the PDP’s turmoil could erode its credibility as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.

Observers say a unified PDP remains vital for democratic accountability in the country. Many within and outside the party are now urging constitutional clarity, reconciliation, and responsible leadership to avert further damage.
