A 92-year-old man, Ryland Headley, has been found guilty of the 1967 rape and murder of 75-year-old Louisa Dunne, bringing long-awaited justice to a case that went unsolved for nearly six decades.
Louisa Dunne was discovered dead in her Easton, Bristol home on June 28, 1967.
Despite an extensive investigation at the time which included 19,000 fingerprint samples, 8,000 house-to-house visits, and 2,000 witness statements police were unable to identify a suspect.
The breakthrough came decades later when Avon and Somerset Police reopened the cold case.
Modern DNA testing of preserved evidence linked the crime to Headley, a convicted rapist from Ipswich. At the time of the attack, he was in his 30s.
Detective Inspector Dave Marchant, who led the renewed investigation, described Headley as a “dangerous serial offender” with a deeply disturbing criminal history.
He hailed the case as a landmark example of combining traditional and modern policing methods.
Headley was arrested in November 2024. A palm print found on the rear window of Mrs. Dunne’s home was later matched to his fingerprints, providing further proof of his presence at the scene.
The court heard that Headley broke into Mrs. Dunne’s home, sexually assaulted her, and then strangled her.
He had a known history of targeting elderly women. In 1977, he was convicted of raping two widows in Suffolk, aged 84 and 79, in attacks that police described as eerily similar to Mrs. Dunne’s case.
Despite overwhelming forensic and witness evidence, Headley denied involvement in the 1967 murder.
He was convicted at Bristol Crown Court and is due to be sentenced on Tuesday.
For Louisa Dunne’s family and the Bristol community, the verdict brings closure to a tragedy that has haunted them for 58 years.
