The Gombe State Police Command has apprehended a 35-year-old man, Usman Kawu, for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit foreign currency amounting to $1,000.
The arrest was made by officers of the Lawanti Airport Division, following intelligence reports about suspicious activities in the area.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the suspect was arrested on Monday, July 1, 2025, and is currently assisting the police with further investigation.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Buhari Abdullahi, the suspect was caught with ten fake $100 bills, which amount to $1,000 in total.
The suspect also had ₦10,000 in Nigerian currency, which, along with the counterfeit dollars, was carefully concealed inside his inner shorts.
All the money was recovered and has been documented as exhibits by law enforcement officials.
Police disclosed that the $1,000 fake notes were roughly equivalent to ₦1.5 million in local currency.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Kawu was fully aware of the counterfeit nature of the currency found in his possession.
In a confession to police, the suspect claimed that an unnamed accomplice handed him the fake notes.
The identity of this accomplice is being withheld at this stage for operational reasons, according to the police.
The law enforcement authorities have since launched a manhunt for the said accomplice and are working to unravel further links and potential members of the criminal network.
The Gombe State Command reaffirmed its commitment to curbing financial crimes and advised members of the public to report suspicious transactions or persons to the nearest police station.
They also warned individuals involved in counterfeiting and related crimes that the long arm of the law would catch up with them.
As investigations continue, Kawu remains in custody and may face prosecution for possessing and attempting to circulate counterfeit currency.
