Lagos LG Polls: IGP Deploys Reinforcements, Anti-Riot Units to Secure Election

Ahead of the July 12 Lagos State local government elections, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional police personnel to the state.

The deployment includes reinforcements from neighbouring states to strengthen existing security structures.

Diaspora Digital MedDDM) reports that the mobilised forces will include anti-riot squads, officers with advanced security tools, and Marine Police units.

These personnel will provide security across both mainland and riverine areas of Lagos, ensuring a smooth and peaceful voting process.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, made the announcement during a press briefing held at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday.

He confirmed that the command had entered into strategic partnerships with the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to deliver comprehensive electoral security.

“We are making adequate preparations. To meet the required deployment numbers as recommended by electoral guidelines, we are bringing in officers from other commands,” Jimoh said.

He disclosed that a thorough threat assessment had already been conducted across all 20 local government areas (LGAs) and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).

High-risk zones have been identified and prioritised for increased security deployment.

Jimoh also stated that temporary restrictions on movement might be enforced in certain locations on election day, pending final consultations with LASIEC.

He emphasized that only authorised security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) would be permitted to operate on election day.

Community-based vigilante or quasi-security outfits are barred from participating in any electoral security activity.

“Only federal security agencies approved for electoral duties will be allowed. Any concerns must be reported directly to the police,” he warned.

Jimoh added that post-election operations would remain active to address any disturbances, whether from celebrations or disputes, after the vote.
