OSOGBO, Nigeria — The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has said law enforcement agencies should determine whether remarks attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi breached any law, following growing controversy over comments linked to the lawmaker ahead of the state governorship election.
The party maintained that it would be inappropriate for political actors to make premature conclusions, insisting that the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies are better placed to investigate the matter and determine whether any offence was committed.
The controversy arose after a video, widely circulated on social media, allegedly showed the senator making comments that critics described as threatening and capable of inciting violence. The remarks have since generated reactions from political parties and stakeholders in the state.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier demanded an investigation into the comments, arguing that statements capable of promoting violence should not be ignored, especially in the tense atmosphere surrounding the forthcoming election.
Reacting to the development, the APC said it supports due process and believes that security agencies should examine the content of the video, establish the facts and determine whether the statements violated existing laws.
The party stressed that political disagreements should be resolved through lawful means and called on all stakeholders to avoid actions or comments that could heighten tension before, during and after the election.
APC officials also urged political parties, candidates and supporters to conduct themselves responsibly and place the peace and stability of Osun State above partisan interests.
The debate over the senator’s remarks comes amid heightened concerns over security in the state, with reports of isolated incidents of violence and allegations of intimidation by rival political groups in the build-up to the poll.
Civil society organisations and election observers have repeatedly called on politicians to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric, warning that careless statements could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Security agencies have, meanwhile, assured residents that adequate measures are being put in place to ensure a peaceful election and protect lives and property across the state.
Political analysts say the handling of the controversy will test the commitment of authorities to impartial law enforcement and the rule of law during the election period.
As campaigns intensify, stakeholders continue to urge restraint, dialogue and respect for democratic principles, emphasising that peaceful conduct remains essential to the credibility of the electoral process.
