The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu of turning Nigeria into what it called “a full-blown borrowing nation,” blaming his administration for pushing the country into an unprecedented debt crisis.

In a strongly worded post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the opposition party alleged that under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria’s public debt has more than tripled, now totaling a staggering ₦99.5 trillion.

The party said Tinubu’s government has mortgaged the country’s future without any concrete plan to repay the borrowed funds.

They warned that the next generation of Nigerians would suffer the consequences of what it described as “reckless, consumption-driven borrowing.”

“President Tinubu has turned Nigeria into a borrowing nation,” the ADC wrote.

“In just two years, our public debt has tripled under this administration  a staggering rise to ₦99.5 trillion.”

The ADC claimed the Federal Government alone accounts for nearly ₦75 trillion of that total, while external debt has surged by over 260%, further exposing Nigeria to global financial instability and currency shocks.

The party criticized the government for what it called a borrowing spree without corresponding improvements in public infrastructure, healthcare, or service delivery.

“Despite the astronomical debt, Nigerians still live with crumbling infrastructure, rising poverty, and skyrocketing inflation,” the statement said.

“The naira has collapsed, unemployment is worsening, and there is no visible plan for debt repayment.”

ADC challenged the government to explain where the borrowed funds have gone and what results they have delivered for ordinary Nigerians.

“Where is the money going?” the party asked.

“Why can’t citizens feel the impact of trillions borrowed? What is the repayment strategy?”

The party warned that Nigeria cannot borrow its way to prosperity without leadership, direction, and accountability.

It also called on citizens to ask tough questions and demand full transparency from the Tinubu administration.

“This is not sustainable,” the ADC concluded.

“We are watching a dangerous economic experiment unfold  and the stakes are too high to stay silent.”
