JUST IN: ASUU Begins Nationwide Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a nationwide strike over unpaid June 2025 salaries.

Branches in the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already joined the industrial action.

ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the directive on Monday, July 7, 2025, in Abuja.

He said the union is enforcing a resolution passed by its National Executive Council (NEC).

The NEC mandates a withdrawal of services if salaries are delayed more than three days into any month.

“We’re simply enforcing our ‘No Pay, No Work’ policy,” Piwuna stated in frustration.

He criticized the government for failing to prioritize lecturers’ welfare despite repeated engagements.

Lecturers have suffered salary delays since being moved to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).

Previously, they were paid under the much-criticized Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Piwuna said the current platform isn’t faulty—blaming officials for deliberately withholding funds.

“When salaries finally come, they’re correct. So, the system isn’t the problem,” he insisted.

He accused the Office of the Accountant General of delaying payment without explanation.

“All concerned agencies are aware. We’ve held meetings. Still, nothing changed,” he added.

University of Jos ASUU Chairman, Dr. Jurbe Molwus, confirmed full compliance with the directive.

He said members had already withdrawn from lectures and statutory meetings since early July.

He warned that similar actions will continue monthly if salaries aren’t paid by the third.

ASUU UniAbuja members also withdrew services on Monday.

Though their chairman didn’t respond, university spokesperson Dr. Habib Yakoob declined to comment.

ASUU warned that unpaid Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) may provoke another strike.

The government has paid ₦40 billion out of ₦50 billion agreed, leaving ₦10 billion outstanding.

Piwuna said: “We want to work, but you can’t work when you’re starving.”

ASUU has activated its monitoring teams nationwide to enforce compliance across all affected campuses.

The strike remains indefinite until lecturers receive their full June 2025 salaries.
