We’re Investigating 18 Governors — EFCC

The Chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that 18 serving governors are under active investigation by the agency.

He made this shocking revelation during a public sensitization program in Lagos on Friday, July 18, 2025.

The event aimed to address the growing trend of abusing and mutilating the naira.

Olukoyede stated that although these governors enjoy constitutional immunity while in office, the EFCC is not sitting idle.

“As I’m talking to you, I’m investigating about 18 governors who are still serving,” he said.

“When they leave office, we will move to the next level.”

He emphasized that the EFCC doesn’t wait until officials vacate their offices before beginning investigations.

He cited a case where a former governor, aware of an imminent arrest, fled the country immediately after handing over.

According to Olukoyede, the ex-governor organized a birthday party in London shortly after his tenure ended.

During the party, the politician reportedly sprayed £50 and £10 notes in the hotel where he lodged.

The bizarre act alarmed the hotel manager, who called the police thinking the man was mentally unstable.

“When the Metropolitan Police arrived,” Olukoyede said, “they were ready to take him into custody using an ambulance. His friends, including two Nigerian governors, had to step in to stop the arrest.”

The EFCC boss used the story to illustrate how deeply corruption runs among top public officials.

He warned that the anti-graft agency is ready to go after anyone involved in financial crimes, regardless of their status.

He also reiterated the agency’s stand against the abuse of Nigeria’s currency, warning that spraying or stamping on naira notes remains a criminal offence under the law.

The revelation has stirred nationwide reactions as Nigerians await the identities of the 18 governors under probe.

Many citizens now wonder whether political immunity is enabling corruption to thrive unchecked.
