Why I Warned Peter Obi – Governor Okpebholo Breaks Silence on Edo Visit

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has explained why Peter Obi must seek approval before visiting the state.

He said it is not a political move but a matter of state security.

His Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, issued a statement on Sunday, July 20, to clarify the governor’s position.

The statement followed backlash after Okpebholo warned Obi not to visit Edo without proper notification.

Security, Not Politics

Governor Okpebholo stated that, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, it is his duty to protect lives and property.

He emphasized that any visit by a high-profile figure must follow due process.

According to him, “We expect all leaders, no matter how highly placed, to respect the protocols in place.”

The governor pointed to recent security threats in Edo State. These include kidnappings, attacks on clergy, and growing unrest in some communities.

He warned that ignoring safety procedures could put both visitors and citizens at risk.

Biblical Reference and Public Safety

Governor Okpebholo backed his position with a quote from the Bible, Matthew 6:2–4. It talks about giving in secret without attracting attention.

He said this principle matters now more than ever, given the current state of insecurity.

“When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets,” the governor quoted.

He urged political leaders to act wisely and avoid actions that could increase risk.

A Warning Against Political Drama

Okpebholo accused some critics of twisting his statement for political gain. He said, “We will not allow politically motivated visits to endanger lives.”

He maintained that his concern is safety, not rivalry. “We are working round the clock to address the security crisis we inherited,” he said. “These rules are for the protection of everyone.”

Respect for Obi, But Procedures Matter

The governor stressed that he respects Peter Obi and other political leaders. However, he insisted that following protocol must remain a priority.

“Governor Okpebholo holds Mr Peter Obi in high regard,” the statement said. “But state protocols must be observed.”
