The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially named Professor Nentawe Yilwatda as its new national chairman.
Diaspora Digital Media reported that his appointment came after the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje, who stepped down due to health-related concerns and mounting internal pressure.
Yilwatda, who currently serves as Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, was sworn in on Thursday, July 24, during the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.
This strategic move by the ruling party marks a new chapter in its leadership structure, especially with the 2027 general elections drawing closer. So, who exactly is Professor Yilwatda? Here are five important things to know:
1. He was born and raised in Plateau State
Nentawe Yilwatda was born on August 8, 1968, in Dungung, Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State. His deep roots in the North-Central region align with the APC’s zoning strategy, which rotated the chairmanship position to the zone after Ganduje’s exit.
2. He flew the APC flag in the 2023 Plateau governorship election
In 2023, Yilwatda contested as the APC’s governorship candidate in Plateau State. Although he lost to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, his campaign gave him visibility and built trust within the party’s national structure.
3. He once served as a Resident Electoral Commissioner under Buhari
From July 2017 to December 2021, he worked as the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Benue State.
He was appointed to the role by former President Muhammadu Buhari. During his tenure, he also oversaw elections in several other states including Rivers and Anambra.
4. He has an academic and technology background
Before venturing into politics, Yilwatda served as the Director of ICT at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
He held that position for 12 years, contributing significantly to digital systems in education.
He is also a Professor of Electrical Engineering.
5. He is a Christian and family man
Yilwatda practices Christianity and is married to Dr. Martina Goshwe. Their union has often been cited by APC insiders as adding to his public image of stability, morality, and inclusive representation in a party often criticized for religious imbalance.
