Tension rises in ADC as leaders pressurize Atiku to resign

Tension is rising within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as leaders pressure former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside.

The party’s crisis deepened after Dumebi Kachikwu, the ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate, accused Atiku of attempting to hijack the party by offering ₦20 million to state chairmen to resign.

Kachikwu described this move as a “political gang operation” that violates the party’s constitution.

Kachikwu claimed Atiku is bribing state chairmen to resign and take over the party, sparking outrage and calls for transparency.

The ADC’s interim management committee is divided, with some members supporting Atiku and others opposing his leadership ambitions.

Prominent figures like Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai are reconsidering their involvement in the ADC due to Atiku’s perceived dominance and presidential ambitions.

El-Rufai has been pushing for power to remain in the South, which could put him at odds with Atiku’s ambitions.

Atiku’s media office responded to President Tinubu’s attacks on the ADC, accusing him of abandoning governance and focusing on petty politics.

Atiku’s camp claimed the presidency is sponsoring internal crises within opposition parties to weaken them .

Observers warn that unless the ADC handles its internal affairs transparently, the coalition may collapse under its own weight.

The party’s ability to retain major political actors like Obi and El-Rufai will determine its chances in the 2027 general elections.
